F.A.Q.

Q: I have only two computers that need to share files. Why would I need a server?
A: If you have a significant amount of files that need to be shared between the two computers, a file server can help centralize storage and make it easier to organize and access files.

Q: Can a Simple Server setup do backups?
A: Absolutely. As a minimum I recommend two daily backups for data protection in case of hardware failures or other emergencies.

Q: Is a file server secure?
A: File servers can offer centralized security measures, such as user authentication and access controls, which can help protect your files from unauthorized access.

Q: If I get more computers, do I need to buy another server?
A: Not if the hardware is still good. A Simple Server can scale easily to accommodate additional users and storage needs.

Q: I have an unused computer. Can I use that as a server?
A: The hardware requirements for a Simple Server are not high. If the computer is not too old, it may be just fine.

Q: Does a server protect against ransomware?
A: The server itself will not. However, if a backup from an earlier time can be used, you may have loss of recent files only.

Q: Does a Simple Server come with free updates?
A: The updates to the software itself are free. Your only cost is our fee to install updates when required.

Q: Is “Simple Server” a brand name?
A: Good question. It is the name under which we do business and we refer to our servers as Simple Servers.

Q: How can the software be free? Is it illegal, or pirated software?
A: Simple Server uses the Debian Linux operating system. Many of the world’s largest websites and internet services run on Linux servers. Linux’s stability, security, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness make it the logical choice for a budget-conscious organization.

Q: What part of Canada do you support?
A: We are based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Technically, we can offer services world-wide, as long as we can have secure access to the server.
